Exhibition Overview

Tom & Michael are two old friends and old squares whose work is finally being brought together in this exhibition. They first met and worked together on the board of a foundation dedicated to supporting Indigenous communities and their rights in various regions of the world. In their artistic careers each has pursued a mixed media practice that irreverently explores identity, a shared love of iconography, and unexpected use of materials.

Tom Seligman received an MFA in Painting and Sculpture and Art History from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1968. He had a lengthy career as a curator focused on African Art at the de Young Museum and museum director. Since retiring from directing the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University in 2012, he has pursued artistic efforts in sculpture, painting, and drawing. His work is in numerous private collections and a museum and has been exhibited at the de Young Museum, the Drawing Room Annex, the Chapel of Jimmy Ray in San Miguel de Allende, the School of Visual Arts, and other group exhibitions. seligmanart.com

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas a visual artist, librettist, author, and mischief-maker. His art lives in public spaces and private collections around the world, including the British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Humboldt Forum in Berlin, Seattle Art Museum, Museum of Anthropology at UBC, and Vancouver Art Gallery. He is currently at work on a commission for the Vancouver Art Gallery. His publications include Flight of the Hummingbird, RED: a Haida Manga, Carpe Fin, and War of the Blink. In 2021, UBC Press published a catalogue of his work, Mischief Making: Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, Art, and the Seriousness of Play, by Dr. Nicola Levell. His most recent book is the critically acclaimed JAJ was released this year. mny.ca
