Holding Space

howardhersh.com

Holding space is the process of witnessing and validating someone else's emotional state while simultaneously being present to your own.  Besides the sculptural reference of occupying space, I think that my works hold space in an energetic way also.

Alone, in front of one of my pieces, it becomes like a container, giving and taking, to and from the viewer, without judgement or agenda.

While 'holding space' is between people, I do like to think of my work as performing the same function.  My latest black work especially allows for more neutrality, more quietness, and yet, more presence.  Holding Space, the work reaches out, but is also comfortable to just be."
